Postgraduate Research (PhD)
Dear Budding Researchers,
The Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Kharagpur produced first engineering PHD graduate in India in the year of 1959.
From those early days to till date, the Electrical Engineering Department enjoys active research atmosphere in IIT Kharagpur.
The IIT Kharagpur invites application from prospective research students twice anually during March-April and November-December. The prospective applicants are requested to visit here.
After initial short-listing, the department conducts the written test and interview to the shortlisted candidates.
The principal component of the research programme is a dissertation based on original research. The student is associated with one or
two research supervisors. A Doctoral Scrutiny Committee (DSC), comprising of a group of faculty members, is formed for each student. Students are required to
complete a specified number of courses, in consultation with their supervisors. Following this, the student is expected to clear a comprehensive viva-voce examination, conducted by
an independent panel of experts. In addition to acquiring knowledge in a broad area, students in the PhD
programme develop an advanced understanding in a field of study, and perform original research, which generally leads to peer-reviewed internationally acclaimed publications.
The average duration of our PhD programme is 5 years.
Research areas check-list for interviews
